Belle Isle is the largest of 18 islands in the Windermere in the English Lake District and the only one that was ever inhabited. It is about 1.5 km long.

The Roman governor of Ambleside built a villa on the island. During the English Civil War it served as a base for the royalists. Long Island was called just " Great Iceland " ( Big Island ), but after it was acquired by the private sector, renamed Belle Isle.
