Beluga-class submarine

P1

The Project 1710 ( NATO code: Beluga ) was a Russian class, diesel-electric powered submarines.

From project in 1710 there was only one copy, the prototype S -533 Forel. This is not uncommon in the Soviet submarine fleet history, as new developments and improvements were constantly being passed in small batches to the fleet.

Little is known about the S -533. The submarine was built by the Admiralty Shipyard in St. Petersburg, was put into service in 1987 and had a length of about 65 meters. It was probably an attempt to project a successor to the successful, but somewhat obsolete in the years project 877, as modern design elements ( envelope shape very similar to the dreaded project 945, modern sensors, possibly an external air- independent propulsion system ) with the classical non-nuclear Power were combined. The attractiveness of the conventional drive way is their safety, low acquisition and operating costs, and suitability for export.

The prototype was probably taken out of service in 1998 and was for some time in a scrap yard in Inkerman at the naval base in Sevastopol. The S -533 was in very poor condition. Some time later, the boat was scrapped there.
