Geography

The river rises on the eastern slopes of Mount Beaufort in the Drummond Range east of the city of Alpha, about 165 km north-east of Blackall. From there it flows to the east of the Great Dividing Range along the north, crosses under the Capricorn Highway at Pine Hill, the road connecting alpha -Clermont in Kingston and finally the Gregory Developmental Road at Belyando Crossing, where it forms the western boundary of the Nairana National Park. A few kilometers further it flows into the Suttor River.

Its catchment area is 35,000 km ². It is used mainly as pasture and to a lesser extent for farming. The land around the Belyando River, there are also the Narrien Range National Park and Epping Forest National Park.

History

Discovery

The river was discovered and named in 1846 by explorer Thomas Livingstone Mitchell on his fourth and last expedition.

Flooding

2011 caused the floods in Queensland floods on Long-Range Belyando River. Many homes and property on its banks were cut off for a long time from the outside world and its inhabitants had to be supplied with food.
