Ben Carnevale

Bernard " Ben" L. Carnevale ( born October 30, 1915 in Raritan, New Jersey, † March 25, 2008 in Williamsburg ) was an American basketball coach.

Life

Born as the son of Alexander and Amelia Carnevale, Carnevale saw his first professional basketball game at the age of 6 years in 1921. After graduating from the Somerville High School in New Jersey Ben was for four years a player at the NY University and won with his team 1935 NCAA Championships. He also reached the finals of the National Invitation Tournament first (NIT ) in 1938.

He received his degree at NYU he made in 1938 in Business and played two years professionally basketball at the Jersey Reds and coached at the high school level, the team of Cranford High School.

After his time as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he coached the team from the University of North Carolina ( UNC) 1944-1946 and reached the Conference victory in 1945 and the NCAA Championship finals in 1946, the UNC " Tar Heels" but lost to Oklahoma State University. Between 1947 and 1967 Carnevale coached the team the U.S. Naval Academy and led them to a 257-160 record and five playoff tournaments and two NIT, which is especially considering the size limitation in the Navy to 1.93 m is remarkable. 1947 Ben Carnevale received the award for best national college coach. Since 21 April 1970 he is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, received due to his outstanding performance for basketball.

Aside from his coaching performance Carnevale was for 20 years a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee from 1964 to 1968 and even the Chairman. He was also a member of the Executive Board and many other committees.
