Benbulbin

The Ben bulbs ( Irish: Binn Ghulbain ) is a 527 meter high Table Mountain in the Republic of Ireland. It is located about ten kilometers north of Sligo town, rises high above the county Sligo and is regarded as the landmark. The mountain is characterized by its well-proportioned shape and is next to the Knock area and the Croagh Patrick one of the most famous mountains in Ireland.

Formation

Ben bulbs was formed during the Ice Age, when large parts of the Earth were under glaciers. Originally it was a great mountain ridge, which was, however, cut by the moving glaciers that cuts into the earth. Thus, this characteristic formation was formed.

The steep sides of Ben bulbs consist largely of Dartry limestone. At the summit, there are smaller areas of Glencar limestone. The flatter pages consist of Ben- bulbs - slate. The rock formations in this area were formed about 320 million years ago.

In Drumcliff, at the foot of Ben bulbs, lies the grave of William Butler Yeats. The poet was buried there at his own request. In his honor, is referred to the area around Ben bulbs unofficially known as Yeats Country (Irish Dúiche Yeats ).

Legends

In a cave of the mountain Diarmuid and Gráinne should have stayed in their flight, a rock formation in the cave is called Leaba Dhiarmada agus Gráinne ( " The bed of Diarmuid and Gráinne "). According to Irish mythology has taken place in this place of death for both ending battle between Diarmuid and the boar of Ben Gulban ( = Ben bulbs ).
