Life

Benedetto Alfieri was trained lawyer and learned, among other things at the Universities of Rome and Turin. In addition, he was also politically active. He was very interested in architecture and was self-taught in this area. Even in his time as mayor of Asti in the years 1726-1730 he planned numerous buildings. He was in 1736 by King Charles Emmanuel III. appointed to Turin and was from 1739 the first civil architect at the court, a newly created position for him. His most famous buildings are, inter alia, Palazzo Ghilini in Alessandria (built around 1732) and the Teatro Regio di Torino (built around 1740). Alfieri is considered one of the outstanding representatives of the late Baroque in Italy due to numerous buildings realized by him. He died of pneumonia.
