Benedict Kingsbury

Benedict Kingsbury (* 1961) is a New Zealand jurist and professor at New York University.

Education and professional career

Kingsbury received his university education at the University of Canterbury, where in 1981 he earned a Bachelor of Laws with a focus on business law. This is followed joined a project supported by a Rhodes scholarship studies at Balliol College, University of Oxford. This he graduated in 1984 with a Master of Philosophy with a focus on International Relations. First Kingsbury remained in Oxford and a doctorate in Ian Brownlie. After completing his dissertation, he worked as a lecturer in law at Oxford before he assumed in 1993 became professor at Duke University. In 1998 he moved to New York University. He was also responsible for the coordination of the LL.M. program until 2009. Since 2002 Kingsbury Director of the Institute of International Law is His research is primarily in the area of international administrative law. He also specializes in matters of personal status of indigenous peoples in international law. Besides his work at New York University Kingsbury took several times visiting professorships, including at Harvard University, the Universities of Tokyo and Padua, and at the Sorbonne in Paris true.

Kingsbury is admitted to practice in New Zealand since 1985.

Memberships and Awards

Kingsbury awarded the 1999 Francis Deak Prize of the American Society for International Law. Since 2003 he is co-editor of the American Journal of International Law, since April 2013 alongside José Enrique Alvarez as its deputy editor. He is also a consultant for several international legal journals, such as the European Journal of International Law. Kingsbury is a member of the scientific advisory board of the Centro Internazionale di Studi Gentiliani.
