Benfluralin is an active ingredient for plant protection and a chemical compound from the group of dinitroaniline derivatives.
Production and representation
Benfluralin can be obtained by nitration of 4- chlorobenzotrifluoride followed by reaction with N- ethylbutylamine.
Properties
Benfluralin is a flammable orange solid, which is practically insoluble in water. The compound is in the pH range of 5-9 stable but sensitive to light.
Use
Benfluralin is used as a herbicide. It is a selective soil herbicide against annual grasses and some annual broadleaf weeds in peanut, salad, cucumber, chicory, endive, field beans, snap beans, lentils, alfalfa, clover, tobacco, and on lawns. It is absorbed through the roots and impact on seed germination and prevents weed growth by inhibiting root and shoot development. It prevents the formation of microtubules.
In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, no pesticide is approved, which contains Benfluralin.
