Benjamín Carrión

Manuel Benjamín Carrión Mora ( born April 20, 1898 in Loja, † March 8, 1979 in Quito ) was an Ecuadorian writer, politician, diplomat and university lecturer. Many see him next to Jorge Icaza one of the most important Ecuadorian writers of the 20th century, although some of his contribution rate as a cultural politicians still significantly higher than its literary.

Life

After he had spent his childhood and youth in Loja, Carrión studied law in Quito. In 1922 he graduated from with a doctorate. In the same year he married Agueda Eguiguren Riofrio and won his first literary prize. Here, too, began his political career with a seat as Member of Parliament for the Socialist Party.

1924 Carrions began a diplomatic career that took him first in France as consul to Le Havre. Later, he served as Ambassador to Colombia ( 1937-39 ), Mexico and Chile. His political career reached its zenith when he became Minister of Education in 1932.

1944 Carrión founded the now named after him, state cultural institution Casa de la Cultura in Quito and its first president was.

Benjamín Carrión died in 1979 at the age of 82 years.
