Bennington County, Vermont

Bennington County is a county located in the state of Vermont in the United States. The the county seat ( county seat ) share Bennington and Manchester.

Geography

The County is bordered on the south by Massachusetts, on the west by New York and has an area of 1755 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Rutland County, Windsor County, Windham County, Franklin County ( Massachusetts), Berkshire County (Massachusetts), Rensselaer County ( New York) and Washington County ( New York).

History

Bennington County in 1777 was one of two Gründungscounties of Vermont.

Demographic data

1900-1990

According to the census of 2000, there were 36,994 people in the county. There were 14,846 households, and 9,917 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.75 % White, 0.42 % African American, 0.20 % Native American, 0.62 % Asian, 0.01 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 0.21 % percent from other ethnic groups; 0.80% were descended from two or more races. 0.93 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 14,846 households out of which 30.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.10 % were married couples living together, 10.10% had a female householder with no husband. 33.20% were non-families. 26.80 % of all households were individuals and 11.60 % had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.91.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 23.70 % under the age of 18, 7.70 % from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44 years, 25.70% between 45 and 64 years and 16.70% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 92.20 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.90 males.

The median income for a household was $ 39,926, and the median income for a family was $ 46,565. Males had a median income of $ 31,982, women $ 23,632. The per capita income was $ 21,193. 10.00 % of the population and 7.00% of families are below the poverty line. 13.40% of those under age 18 and 7.90% were 65 years or older.

Cities and Towns

In addition to the self- managed communities that are listed in the list, there are still four dependent Villages in the County, which are co-managed by their parent municipality: Village Manchester, Readsboro Village, North Bennington and Old Bennington.
