History

The construction of a new stadium was needed because at the Hermann - Lons Stadium, the former stadium of SC Paderborn 07 ( SCP), only thanks to a special permit by the DFB Regional and second division games could be played. Already on 17 January 2001, the SCP developed concrete proposals for a new football-only stadium in Paderborn. On 11 May 2003, the sports committee of the city decided the end of the Hermann- Lons stadium. Eight locations were examined by the town for the construction of a stadium, the Almeaue and the expansion of the Ahorn Sports Park were found to be suitable. The expansion of the Ahorn Sports Park was rejected by the SCP, however, because it is there at an athletics stadium, which is nowadays in football considered out of date. Then pleaded the administration on 16 April 2004 for a new building on the Almeaue / Hoppenhof. Construction of the stadium was on 12 July 2005, as mayor Heinz Paus and District Manfred Müller first names for the groundbreaking ceremony. The construction period was estimated at six months, so that as early as the second half of the 2005/06 season home games of the SCP should be played in the new stadium. From November 2005, initially rested the construction work after the Higher Administrative Court of North Rhine -Westphalia in Muenster withdrew the building permit on 16 November 2005 due to residents complaints. After creating a new development plan and the grant of a new building permit, the construction was after two year hiatus, resumed on 26 November 2007.

On 14 January 2008, the general contractor Bremer AG interrupted the works, because the city of Paderborn had not yet paid their financial commitment in the amount of € 3.4 million in full and at Bremer thus open invoices in the amount of about 2 million € had not yet been settled. On 11 February 2008, work was started to further construction again after the city of Paderborn had paid the outstanding sum to the general contractor. The construction was continued at your own risk, as residents lawsuits still pending and an anonymous complaint with the Competition Commission in Brussels existed for alleged illegal aid; until the beginning of March 2008, removes all obstacles. On 5 March 2008, the visit of a delegation of DFL and DFB to inspect the arena. On 30 June 2008, the stadium was after 2 ½ - year delay, passed by the Bremen AG to the SCP and opened on 16 July 2008 with a friendly match between the SCP and Galatasaray (1-1). The official opening ceremony took place on July 20, 2008, instead of a subsequent match against Borussia Dortmund (1:2), while the stadium with 15,000 spectators was sold out except for a few VIP seats.

On 31 March 2009, the first international football match took place in the paragon arena: The German Under-21 team played in a preseason game for the Under-21 European Championship 2009 in Sweden against Belarus (1-1).

On 26 June 2009, the paragon arena was renamed the Energy Team Arena since the Paragon AG was no longer financially able to keep the names straight.

On 14 June 2012, it was announced that the Paderborn steelworks Benteler is future title sponsor of the arena. The Energy Team Arena was renamed on 1 July 2012 in Benteler Arena.

All stands are completely covered. The playing field is equipped according to the latest Bundesliga standards with a lawn heating, sprinkler and turf. The very short set-in construction should be possible by the use of prefabricated components. The construction costs were set at around 9 million euros. Because of the delays caused by residents complaints and the resulting new development plan, which provided for the additional direct connection to the B 1, further parking and changing the roof slope in connection with the installation of steel beams in the spectator area, the cost, however, increased to more than double the originally planned cost.
