Benzal chloride is a chemical compound from the group of aromatic chlorinated halocarbons (more precisely, the chlorinated toluene derivatives ). It is in the form of an air weak fuming colorless liquid.
Production and representation
Benzal chloride can be illustrated by toluene for benzyl chloride by free radical chlorination ( Seitenkettenhalogenierung radical ), where benzotrichloride formed.
In an optimized reaction conditions, the reaction is below the boiling point of benzal chloride and chlorinated under photochemical conditions in the gas phase, however, there arises practically only benzal chloride.
Properties
Hydrolysis of benzal chloride produced benzaldehyde:
With strong bases phenylcarbene forms.
Use
Benzal chloride is used for the production of benzaldehyde, cinnamic acid, and others.
Proof
Benzal chloride can be detected by gas chromatography.
