Properties
Benzethonium chloride is a white odorless hygroscopic moisture sensitive flammable solid with antimicrobial activity, which is readily soluble in water.
Use
Benzethonium chloride is used in the cosmetics industry and pharmaceuticals as a preservative. For use in the food industry benzethonium chloride is not approved in Germany. In clinical diagnosis, it is used as a reagent in the determination of protein in urine and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). As a cationic detergent benzethonium chloride also finds in biochemistry as a protease inhibitor use.
