Benzyl is an organic chemical compound from the group of phthalates ( esters of phthalic acid ) which was mainly used as plasticizers for PVC. It is a colorless, nearly odorless, oily liquid.

Production and representation

Is produced by the reaction of benzyl Monobutylesters of phthalic acid with benzyl chloride.

Properties

Physical Properties

Benzyl having a viscosity of 62 mPa · s at 20 ° C. The vapors of benzylbutyl 10.77 times heavier than air.

Chemical Properties

Benzyl is the only industrially important phthalate with different side chains, one of which represents a benzyl group.

Use

Butyl benzyl phthalate is used as external plasticizers for polyvinyl and cellulosic thermoplastics, polysulfide, polyurethane, ethyl cellulose and Polyvinylacetatemulsionsklebstoffe. End products such as Floor coverings based on PVC, surface coatings (such as automobiles ), packaging materials, adhesives and electrical installation materials.

Safety

BBP may impair fertility and offspring development in the womb at high doses in animal studies and was therefore classified in the EU in the group of substances toxic to reproduction 2005. It is already prohibited from using BBP in toys and childcare articles, because the substance is listed in Annex 1 of the Commodities Regulation. In the latest draft of the Directive 2002/95/EC RoHS benzyl butyl phthalate is added to the banned substances.

Proof

Can demonstrate benzylbutylphthalate by chromatographic methods ( gas or liquid process) or mass spectrometry.
