The aristate barberry (Berberis aristata ) is a plant from the family of Barberry Family ( Berberidaceae ). It is native to northern India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan.

Description

The aristate barberry is a deciduous ( deciduous ) shrub that can reach a height of up to 3 meters. The bare branches of the shrub are round and bent over, and at first yellowish or reddish brown, later gray. The thorns are one to three parts and up to 3 inches long.

The upper side dull green above, pale green to whitish leaves are obovate to elliptic, obtuse or acuminate, on both sides with 3-5 spines, up to 6 inches long, both sides clearly annoying network. In autumn they are colored bright red.

The vivid yellow, externally reddish flowers appear in May to 10 to 25 in up to 10 centimeters long protruding grape. The oblong berries are vividly colored red and frosted strong bluish.

Use

This species and its varieties are used as an ornamental shrub in gardens and parks.

System

A synonym for the species is Berberis chitria.

With the ordinary barberry (Berberis vulgaris ) is the aristate barberry Berberis × macrantha the hybrids.
