Berea is a city in Cuyahoga County in the U.S. state of Ohio. It lies approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Cleveland, is 14.4 km ² and had (2000) 18,970 inhabitants, of which 91.5 % White.

History

The first settlement in the area was established in 1828 with a Christian- socialist community called Lyceum Village. However, the plan failed until 1844 due to lack of supply.

Today's Berea in 1850 spun off from the Middleburg Township. It is related to the mining of sandstone on the banks of the Rocky River in connection that was used locally for the production of grinding stones. Production ended in 1946, when eventual winner silicon carbide as an abrasive.
