The Berfa is a right-side tributary of the Schwalm. It rises near the deserted village Geiersrod about two kilometers south of Görzhain ( Schwalm- Eder-Kreis ) and two kilometers north of Bieben ( Vogelsberg ) near the BAB 5 The source height is approximately 440 meters. The next mountain is the High courtship with a peak altitude of 444 meters.

First, the Berfa flows in a southwesterly direction following the BAB 5 towards Lingelbach. Here it is crossed by the national road 3161.
