Berlengas

The berlengas is an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal in Peniche. They consist of the three archipelagos of Berlenga Grande, the Farilhões and Estela.

The largest of all the islands is Berlenga Grande ( or Ilha da Berlenga ), she is the only one that is partially inhabited. In ancient times it was called by Claudius Ptolemy Londobris. The archipelago is a nature reserve with great tourist importance for the nearby city of Peniche.

The waters around the inhabited by only about 50 people Berlenga Islands are popular diving area. The main island has amazing rock formations and coves and caves. Below the lighthouse, the Forte de São João Baptista is the berlengas.
