Berlin Jannowitzbrücke station

The S - and U -Bahn station located on the same Jannowitzbruecke bridge in the Berlin district of Mitte and is a crossing point of public transport. Just south of the station is the bridge road, north Holzmarktstraße and Alexander Street. The station also serves as the breakpoint of several private excursions and sightseeing ships, among others, the star and circle shipping and the shipping company Riedel.

S-Bahn station

When the Jannowitzbruecke was rebuilt (1881-1883), the suburban station on the Stadtbahn viaduct was opened right next to the river Spree at the same time. When opening date February 7, 1882 is officially stated. Since the stop was only an open platform roofing, the passengers were increasingly open to the weather and the smoke from the locomotives. 1885 was therefore given the station a first weather protection in the form of a glass wall, which was built between the suburban and the remote track pair. About one roof, the glass wall and the existing platform roofing were connected, so that the construction of a semi-open to the north train shed was built.

The traffic light rail steadily increased, and the narrow central platform of the suburban railway station Jannowitzbruecke had to be widened. In order to obtain enough space, the tracks of the long-distance transport 1906/1907 have been slightly moved towards the south, so that they now were by a supporting structure directly on the river Spree. In 1997, the design has been changed slightly to increase stability.

As the new tram system had proven and from 1928 also should take the light rail electric trains, the station was demolished and rebuilt in 1927-1932 by architect Hugo Röttcher in its present form. As of June 11, 1928 S -Bahn trains ran in the newly constructed station.

At the end of the Second World War, the train had to stop its operations in April 1945. As of November 15, 1945 went back S -Bahn trains, and traffic increased due to the transit traffic of S- and U -Bahn steadily. This transfer possibility had existed since the wall was built on 13 August 1961 not: Notes on the subway were removed and the Jannowitzbruecke station was for "simple" S -Bahn station. Already on November 11, 1989 - a few days after the turn - it was again possible to switch between S- Bahn and U -Bahn.

Then stood on a thorough renovation of the rail. The S-Bahn trains pulled into the disused long distance tracks outside the S -Bahn -Halle, so that they could not keep them there. So it was possible to clean up the S -Bahn - Station from 15 November 1994 to October 21, 1996 completely. Since then, a lift, various escalators and shops enrich the station.

Subway station

After the end of the 19th century in Berlin, the decision was taken to build a new high-speed railway system, various proposals were submitted to it. In addition to the built later subway system from Siemens, there was also the idea of a monorail, as it had already been built, for example, in Wuppertal. This is also a monorail station Jannowitzbruecke was considered. For aesthetic reasons, the Berlin city fathers of this system, however, refused, favoring the subway system from Siemens or AEG.

The AEG laid in 1907, plans for a new metro line from Rixdorf (now Neukölln ) prior to Gesundbrunnen. The negotiations with Berlin were very tough, until finally the two parties were able to agree on a contract in 1912. After following the First World War and the subsequent economic crisis, the AEG- speed rail -AG, a subsidiary of AEG, went bankrupt and was liquidated, the city of Berlin took over the previously constructed underground buildings, this included among others, the Spreeunterfahrung in Jannowitzbruecke. This, however, was not present as it is today under the Jannowitzbruecke, but under the bridge orphans. This tunnel piece was later converted into an operating tunnel. The city also corrected once the course, for example at Alexanderplatz in order to achieve a better Umsteigebeziehung.

On April 6, 1928, the route Schönleinstraße - Neanderstraße today's U8 was opened. As already mentioned, the curve had to be corrected. Since the Jannowitzbruecke was in poor condition, it was replaced by a new building. Since the Jannowitzbruecke could not be used, the road traffic was diverted via the indwelling near orphans bridge. For pedestrians own temporary bridge had to be built. Finally, it could be opened with the Jannowitzbruecke Metro Station on 18 April 1930, the section Neanderstraße - healthy well.

During the Second World War, the station suffered no damage, only in the time of " final battle " he had to be closed. This was from April 1945 until June 16, the case, the then line D - today U8 - could first of all lines are traveled in full length and in circulation operating on the route healthy well - Leinestraße therefore already on 16 June.

16 years later, on 13 August 1961, the station but had to be closed again. But this time not only for a few months, but for more than 28 years. The station was due to the Wall a " ghost station ". The trains ran then through simple, the line D held a single time in East Berlin. The approaches to two levels above propelled train were completely bricked, only a faint rumbling could still be heard. By the way, have been on this route, as well as on the metro line C (today U6), only one used the trains oldest series, as the BVG (West) feared that the GDR procrastinate in an action new trains across the orphans tunnel to East Berlin could.

To turn times of the subway station Jannowitzbruecke again played a very important role: Two days after the fall of the wall of the subway station was reopened on 11 November 1989 as a border crossing point, for which appropriated the mezzanine located between U- Bahn and S -Bahn.

Thus, the station played an important role in cross-border traffic: The East Berlin, who had traveled with the S-Bahn, now could get via Hermann Square with the U7 into West Berlin center. Months later, on 1 July 1990, accounted for the economic, monetary and social union between the two German states, the border controls. Thus, the station could be used again without limitations.

In the years 2002 and 2003 made a ceiling renovation of the station, replacement of lighting as well as a completion to the passenger information system " DAISY ". On 19 January 2009, the refurbishment of the platform, was in until May 3, the side of the platform in the direction of Hermann street completely renovated in the first phase of construction and provided with a blind control system began. From May 4 to July 23, 2009 was followed in the second section, the side towards Wittenau. The opening was planned for August 13, but to mitigate the restrictions in the S -Bahn (no traffic on the rail ), the station was released earlier.

In a second phase of the station renovation, the southern vestibule is to be renovated, installed a lift and exit towards Holzmarktstraße be opened. It is also planned to open a new service center. By mid-2010 the station furniture should be renewed and the renewal of the tiles in the back of the track area and on the platform are ( pillars, etc. ) is performed. The renovation work has now been completed.

The installation of an elevator is scheduled for 2015.
