The Berlin Mathematical School ( BMS ) is a joint graduate school of the Berlin universities: the Free University, the Technical University and the Humboldt -Universität zu Berlin (HU Berlin). The BMS is one of the newest institutions in the Berlin research. It was founded in June 2006. In October 2006, she was awarded in the first round of the Excellence Initiative of the federal and state governments as graduate school. In 2012, BMS has also been included in the second phase of the Excellence Initiative. The BMS combines an innovative concept with a teaching program that is tailored to meet the needs of students. BMS is headed by Jürg Kramer (HU Berlin), Konrad Polthier (FU Berlin ) and John Sullivan (TU Berlin).

Vision

The BMS has set itself the goal of the Berlin researchers and students from the different areas of mathematics and international scientists to bring together as doctoral students to Berlin. "Mathematics as a Whole " is the approach with which the BMS would overcome the perceived barriers between pure and applied mathematics. In addition to the pursuit of scientific excellence, the BMS has the following objectives: internationalism, diversity and equal opportunities for women and men. The BMS provides students and scientists outstanding research conditions in a liberal working environment. For the future, the BMS is aiming for a female share of 50%.

Cooperations

The BMS is firmly anchored in the Berlin research. It is not only the joint graduate school of the three Berlin universities, but also partners of various Berlin institutions in mathematics: the Max Planck Research Schools, the DFG Research Center Matheon (Mathematics in Key Technologies), the Collaborative Research Center 647 "Space - Time - Matter " the Konrad Zuse Center for Information Technology Berlin (ZIB ) and the Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics.

Students have access to exclusive seminars, workshops and lectures in English at the universities of Berlin, as well as to events that take place in the cooperation partners of the BMS.

PhD in Mathematics

The program " Ph.D. in Mathematics "at the BMS introduces students to four to five years for promotion. Applicants who hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent are eligible to apply directly for the BMS Phase 1. About this way they will complete within 3-4 semesters of courses at Master's level and after an examination in the phase II, move the dissertation phase. To apply directly for Phase II, students are required to have a master or equivalent degree. Then you start directly with their actual PhD project. Of these candidates will be expected to already have a solid idea of the topic of their dissertation in their application.

Forum BMS Fridays

Under the name of the BMS BMS Fridays offers a colloquium every second Friday takes place usually during the semester in the BMS Loft at the Urania. This is encouraged in the BMS a national and international mathematicians to present their research areas. The BMS Fridays are also seminars and workshops in the morning as well as "Tea & Cookies" before each presentation.
