Berlin Painter

Berlin Painter ( active around 505-460 BCE in Athens from ) is the Notname a Greek vase painter of the Attic red-figure - style. He is considered a pioneer of the early classical and one of the most talented vase painters of his time.

It was named after the amphora F 2160 the Berlin Collection of Classical Antiquities. From this work between 200 and 250 works are now assigned to him, mostly medium to large vessels such as the abdominal and neck amphorae, hydria, craters and a few small-scale ceramics such Peliken and lekythoi. There is still no known painted bowl from him, which is why it is believed that he generally not painted such. Notwithstanding his usual style, there are also a small number of black-figure amphora panathenäischer that you also refer to it. John Boardman, who ascribes to him almost 300 pieces, referred to him as the best painters of the early 5th century BC beside the Kleophrades painter.

In his works, the male, which he recorded in all of its fluid movements dominated. The shapes of women and goddesses contrast, act in their clothes, their wrinkles game he does not use, usually somewhat stiff and let the dynamics of their male counterparts miss. With increasing maturity, his painting is becoming more routine and leaves in late work miss the experimental fire of youth, which is why the research is divided as to whether the assigned day late works are actually from his hand or already work of students.

In his early style of the Berlin painter is close to the famous painters by name Euthymides and Phintias, which is why it is believed that he could have gone with them into teaching. He himself was then a model for a whole generation of artists in the years, of which he has formed perhaps some, such as the Achilles Painter, Hermonax and the Providence Painter, himself.
