Bermondsey Square

The Bermondsey Square is a place on Tower Bridge Road in Bermondsey, part of the London Borough of Southwark in south London, England. Originally Bermondsey Square was the site of Bermondsey Abbey from the 11th century.

In the years 2005/2006 archaeological excavations were carried out by English Heritage. The earliest medieval finds were a Norman church of about 1080, which is mentioned already in the Domesday Book. The area had experienced a continuous development since then. Here the Bermondsey Square Hotel was opened in April 2009.

The Bermondsey Market is an antiques market at Bermondsey Square, which takes place every Friday.

The Long Lane leads north-west to Borough High Street. This road has the originally connected with the Abbey Church of St George the Martyr on the High Street. in a westerly and northerly direction leads the Bermondsey Street, which leads to Tooley Street and for a distance of about ten minutes walking distance to London Bridge Station.

History

The Bermondsey Square was originally known as Courtyard and set the square site of Bermondsey Abbey dar. Here was formerly a chapel, which was built in 1699 under Puritan background. Later the chapel was used as a wool shop before it was destroyed. At the entrance to the place between the public buildings of King John's Head and an oil trade, was the gatehouse of the Abbey, which was demolished in the early 19th century. Between the entrance to the Long Walk and a salt action was the Mansion House, which was built from materials of the Abbey.
