Bernard Foccroulle

Bernard Foccroulle ( born November 23, 1953 in Liège ) is a Belgian composer, organist, and opera director.

Life

The son of a pianist studied at the conservatory of his native city of Liege with the organist Hubert Schoonbroodt. He continued his studies at Xavier Darasse and Gustav Leonhardt.

His reputation grew after he was invited to the Festival of Royan. The recording of the complete works for organ by Johann Sebastian Bach on historical organs on 18 CDs made ​​him known beyond the borders of his home country also.

He is both the Baroque music as well as contemporary music and was fond temporarily teacher for music analysis at the Liège Conservatory. In the field of modern music he played premieres or first recordings of works by the composer Luciano Berio, Philippe Boesman, Amy Johansen, György Ligeti, his teacher Xavier Darasse and others. Founded with the playing music on original instruments Ricercar Consort, 1980 by Foccroulle, Philippe Pierlot and François Fernandez, he made numerous recordings of works by North German Baroque composer from the period before the stream.

His compositions include works for organ, but also chamber music with some viol.

Foccroulle 1992, was appointed Director General of the Brussels opera the Royal Monnaie Theatre. He continued the successful work of his predecessor Gerard Mortier, who had helped the opera house international reputation. In 2007, he ceded this office to Peter de Caluwe. Since then, he is artistic director at the Festival d' Aix -en- Provence. In addition to this, he shall continue as a concert organist in appearance.
