Bernardino Piñera

Bernardino Piñera Carvallo ( born September 22, 1915 in Paris) is Emeritus Archbishop of La Serena.

Life

Bernardino Piñera Carvallo received on 5 April 1947, and was ordained priest incardinated in the clergy of the Archdiocese of Santiago de Chile. He was Jusitiziar of Catholic Action and consultants of the Federation of Catholic Youth Femenina.

Pope Pius XII. appointed him on 11 February 1958 Auxiliary Bishop of Talca and titular bishop of Prusias ad Hypium. The Bishop of Talca, Manuel Larraín Errazuriz consecrated him on 27 April of the same year the bishop; Co-consecrators were Pio Alberto Fariña Fariña, Auxiliary Bishop of Santiago de Chile, and Emilio Tagle Covarrubias, Archbishop of Santiago de Chile.

Pope John XXIII. appointed him on 10 December 1960 Bishop of Temuco and was introduced on January 7 of next year into office. From 1962 to 1965 he participated in all sessions of the Second Vatican Council. He joined on 28 December 1977 by this office back. On 1 July 1983 he was appointed Archbishop of La Serena. From 1984 to 1987 he was president of the Chilean Bishops' Conference. On September 29, 1990, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation due to age.

Bernardino Piñera Carvallo is the uncle of the current Chilean president Sebastián Piñera.
