Berndt Seite

Berndt Page ( born April 22, 1940 in Hahn forest near Trebnitzgrund, Silesia Province), is a German politician ( CDU), who joined the CDU in 1990 and was from 1992 to 1998 Minister of the State of Mecklenburg- Vorpommern.

Life

Berndt page visited the country Pforta, then studied veterinary medicine and has long worked as a veterinarian.

Policy

From 1990 to 1992 Berndt was the site of the Secretary-General of the CDU in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

After the forced of the CDU parliamentary group by vote of no confidence resignation of Alfred Gomolka as Prime Minister Page was elected to succeed him and continued the black-yellow coalition. When he assumed office as President of the Bundesrat Gomolkas, which he held until 31 October 1992.

In the first year of his tenure, there were the riots of Rostock light Hagen. As a consequence their side demanded an amendment to the asylum law, as then already required by federal politicians of the CDU and was completed a year later by constitutional amendment. Thus, the influx of asylum seekers should be drastically reduced.

In the state elections in 1994, which took place parallel to the federal election, the CDU could maintain their position ( 37.7 %, -0.5 percentage points), while the SPD increased slightly ( 29.5%, 2.5 percentage points). Since the FDP withdrew from the Diet (3.8%) and otherwise only the PDS was represented in Parliament, a grand coalition was formed, presided over by the side as Prime Minister.

In the 1998 state elections, which in turn took place parallel to the federal election, the CDU suffered heavy losses ( 30.2%, down 7.5 percentage points), while the SPD strongest among Harald Ringstorff force was ( 34.3 %) and together with the PDS the first red - red coalition formed nationwide.

Page still declared on election night its withdrawal from the country's politics. On 3 November 1998 Harald Ringstorff was elected to Seites successor.
