Bernhard Crusell

Bernhard Henrik Crusell (* October 15, 1775 in Nystad, Finnish Uusikaupunki, Finland, † July 28, 1838 in Stockholm) was a Finnish clarinetist and composer.

At the age of 12 he was a clarinetist in a military chapel in Suomenlinna. He later moved to Stockholm, where he was court musician in 1793. After a stay in Berlin, where he was taught by Franz exchange, he studied clarinet and composition at the Conservatory in 1803 Paris, among others, Abbé Vogler and Gossec. After his return to the court orchestra in Stockholm, he brought it there in 1818 music director of the Royal Grenadier regiments.

Crusell was an outstanding clarinet soloist. He also translated the librettos of many operas into Swedish.

Its very virtuosic compositions - usually with or for Clarinet - until today, not least thanks to the use of the clarinetist Jost Michaels Crusells for work in the last century, widely appreciated today. You are an early romantic sound ideal obliged full of original thematic ideas and move Crusells style in the near Weber.

Crusell wrote clarinet concertos, a Sinfonia Concertante for clarinet, horn, bassoon and orchestra, quartets for clarinet with string instruments, clarinet duos, a quintet for oboe and string quartet, but also the opera Lilla Slafvinnan ( Small slave ), also incidental music and songs.
