Bernhard Langer

Bernhard Langer, OBE ( born August 27, 1957 in Anhausen ) is a German professional golfer. He is one of the "Big Five", a group of world-class golfers who were all born within 12 months, won at least one Major and Europe have made competitive in the Ryder Cup. The others are Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam. Langer is the first German golfer who gained international acclaim.

Career

Pro Tour

Langer started his professional career in 1976 as a golf instructor at the Golf Club Augsburg-Bobingen/Burgwalden. When playing pro, he won the 1979 German Golf Teachers Cup in Stuttgart eV on the square of the Stuttgart Golf Club Solitude, where he also built in 1982 the Lufthansa German Open and the 1985 American Express, the German national championship won. His big break came with the first major title, winning the U.S. Masters Tournament on April 14, 1985 in Augusta / Georgia ( USA). As the first German he was awarded the winner's cup. In 1986, Langer was the first number 1 of the newly constructed golf world rankings. In 1993, Langer was able to repeat his triumph at Augusta and won his second major tournament. In 2006, Langer won by the side of Marcel Siem, the unofficial team World Cup in Barbados for the second time (16 years after his first historic victory, then with Torsten Giedeon ).

Since 2008, Langer plays on the North American Champions Tour ( designation until 2002 Senior PGA Tour ) of the 50 -year-old professional golfer, he won the first time. Organizer

After winning the 1985 Masters Langer envisioned a German Masters on the American model. After the signing of the contract between Langer, the International Management Group (IMG ) and the Stuttgarter Golf - Club Solitude eV were held the first German Masters in 1987 and in the following years until 1991, when Mercedes German Masters in Stuttgart. From 2007 to 2009 the tournament was called the Mercedes Benz Championship and was discharged on the principle of "winners only" on the Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course in Gut Lärchenhof Pulheim near Cologne. With four titles Langer himself is the record winner of the tournament.

Established in 1990, Langer Sport Marketing GmbH, which is largely run by Bernard brother Erwin, looked next to the Mercedes Benz Championship also other professional tournaments, as well as smaller events at youth level and corporate events.

Ryder Cup

After ten most successful Ryder Cup appearances as a player, he led in the 2004 Ryder Cup in Bloomfield Hills (USA), the European team as captain to the historic 18,5:9,5 win over the United States. Langer is one next to Nick Faldo Europe's most successful players in the Ryder Cup, both in terms of its operations and its points scored.

Together with his brother Erwin Langer he was anxious to bring the Ryder Cup in 2018 for the first time to Germany. The focus, however, was awarded to France.

Awards

  • In 2006 he was appointed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his services to the sport of golf to Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE Honorary ).

Private

Langer is married to the American Vikki Carol since 1984. The couple has four children: Jackie, Stefan, Christina and Jason. The family lives in Boca Raton, Florida, as well as in Langer's birthplace Anhausen.

Twice (2005 and 2006) won Bernhard and Stefan Langer at the Father / Son Challenge, an annual tournament for golfers on the PGA and Champions Tour and their sons or daughters. 2013 Bernhard Langer took up with his daughter Christina and took with her the shared ninth place among twenty teams.

Bernhard Langer is a board member of the evangelical, the YMCA affiliated association ProChrist, mass evangelism events organized. It also supports the Christian sports organization SRS.
