Berthold, Duke of Merania

Berthold IV of Andechs († August 12, 1204 ) was Count of Andechs and Duke of Meranien. He was the eldest son of Count Berthold III. Hedwig of Andechs and of Wittelsbach.

1170 is the first time he enters 1172 as Count of Andechs and 1175 as Margrave of Istria, ten years later ( 1185 ) for the area in Rijeka as Duke of Meranien. Again, ten years later, by 1195, he testified as bailiff of Tegernsee.

He took in 1186 to King Henry VI. Italian campaign in part, and later in the army of Emperor Barbarossa in the Third Crusade. After the death of Henry VI. he stood in the struggle for the throne on the side of Philip of Swabia.

In his time the family reached the zenith of Andechs- Meranien their reputation. Your possession ranged from Franconia to the Adriatic Sea, and it Berthold, his daughters to gain both the Crown of Hungary as well as the French, even if the French marriage was annulled because of a non-recognized divorce later succeeded.

Berthold died 1204 and was buried in Unterdießen.

Marriage and issue

In 1180 he was married to Agnes of Rochlitz from the family of Wettin, the daughter of the Dedos finest in Graf von Groitzsch and Lord of Rochlitz. She died on March 25, 1195 and was buried in Unterdießen.
