Berthold I, Duke of Swabia

Berthold of Rheinfelden (* 1060, † May 18, 1090 ) was the son of Rudolf of Rheinfelden and Duke of Swabia. His mother is not quite securely, just as the exact year of birth ( around 1060? ).

He succeeded his father during his lifetime as Duke of Swabia. Due to the natural death of his wife Rudolf needed ( anti-king to Henry IV ) a new organizer of the South German resistance against Henry IV, as Rudolf himself was confined with his rule on Saxony and cut off from its southern German ally.

Heinrich turned Berthold Friedrich von Bueren then (family later Staufer ) as the new Duke of Swabia contrary, who possessed numerous strategically well situated estates in Swabia and so was able to continue the struggle of Heinricianer against the followers of Rudolf effective. Swabia remained during the revolt of the princes against Henry IV, one of the main combat zones and sank into the chaos of civil war.

Although Berthold had the broader power base as Friedrich, he remained a duke without a profile. He left the fight against the imperial party, especially Duke Berthold II of Zahringen and Welf IV Obviously was already in 1079 found that the Zähringian of Berthold, who died in 1090 without issue, and in the monastery of St. Blaise was buried, should take over the Duke Office what then happened in 1090.
