Bertil Haase

Bertil Robert Herman Vidarsson Haase ( born June 5, 1923 in Uppsala ) is a former Swedish Modern pentathlete. He participated at the Olympic Winter and Summer Games.

Even as a young Bertil Haase was an enthusiastic all-round sportsman who was active except in skiing also in swimming and running. As a volunteer with the Swedish army he attended NCO School (Swedish: Volunteer, Konstapel -och furirskola, Furir ) and could strengthen his sporting activities there. He left the army later than Kapten. In 1948 he then took with Claes Egnell, William Grut and Gustaf Lindh in Winter Pentathlon at the Olympic Winter Games in St. Moritz in part. After two victories in the discipline of downhill and cross-country, he finished in the final standings behind Lindh and Grut third place and won the bronze medal.

Since the Winter Pentathlon was a one-off appearance at the Olympic Games, Haase turned to the modern pentathlon. Although he was a mediocre shooter, but a good fencer, running and swimming were also among his strengths. In 1956 he was nominated for the Summer Olympics in Melbourne and went to Modern Pentathlon. In individual he finished seventeenth place. Together with the Olympic gold medalist in singles, Lars Hall and Björn Thofelt he also formed the Swedish team, which was in the lead after three disciplines. But after Thofelt when riding after two falls - the saddle had turned down twice - had to give up with a concussion, the Swedish team not winning a second Olympic medal was denied in the standings and Haase remained.

Also at the World Championships in Modern Pentathlon Haase was successful. In the team, he secured the title in 1950 in Bern, together with Lars Hall and Thor Henning, 1954 in Budapest, he was with Åke Julin and Björn Thofelt third parties. His career ended in 1957, and married in the same year his wife Ann Marie.

Haase's home club was Stockholm's student Erna Idrottsförening. He completed his engineering studies at KTH Stockholm with a focus on metallurgy and worked in the steel industry in Fagersta, where he still lives today.

Bertil Haase took 1979 as all Swedish participants of the Winter Pentathlon Modern Pentathlon and many of camphor from the fifties at a seniors competition in Budapest. He continues to have contact with Hall, Grut, Lindh, Thofelt and Egnell.
