Beryciformes

The Northern mucus head or orange roughy ( Beryx decadactylus ), the only occurring in the North Sea representatives of the order

The mucus -like head ( Beryciformes ) are an order of bony fishes ( Osteichthyes ). They are known already from the Cretaceous period. The fish live exclusively in the sea, partly in the deep sea.

Features

Most species have a narrow, high-backed body. At the top there is mucus channels that can perceive the sidelines flow stimuli similar. ( Before the eyes there are two additional neuromasts, which are characteristic of the order. ) An eye gill gland ( pseudobranch ) is available. The deep-sea species are no scales or they comb scales, species in shallow waters have spiny scales. Your occupied with numerous small teeth jaws are little vorstreckbar. The number of Branchiostegalstrahlen is four to nine. The fish have only one dorsal fin, the pelvic fins are far forward, the first rays of the dorsal and anal fins are usually sting rays. The caudal fin is forked, the caudal skeleton has Caudalstacheln above and below the normal branched fin rays. The swim bladder is formed with or without duct pneumaticus.

System

The following families are traditionally among the Beryciformes:

  • Planthopper ( Anomalopidae )
  • Catch toothfish ( Anoplogastridae )
  • Mucus heads ( Berycidae )
  • Silver heads ( Diretmidae )
  • Pinecone fish ( Monocentridae )
  • Sägebäuche ( Trachichthyidae )

For the soldiers and hussars fish ( Holocentridae ), previously belonging to the Beryciformes, built Ricardo Betancur -R. and colleagues in their recent revision of the bonefish 2013 its own order, the Holocentriformes. In contrast, they found all the families of the mandrel Fishy ( Stephanoberyciformes ) and the Walkopfartigen ( Cetomimiformes ) in the resulting monophyletic expectant order Beryciformes.

Thus, the following seven families added:

  • Latticed fish ( Melamphaidae )
  • Thorn fish ( Stephanoberycidae )
  • Hispidoberycidae
  • Gibberichthyidae
  • Rotmäulige Walkopffische ( Rondeletiidae )
  • Barbourisiidae
  • Walköpfe ( Cetomimidae )

A similar approach was followed in 1993 Jon A. Moore; However, he was just putting the family Berycidae not in the treated here kinship group, which is why he his ( otherwise the - extended mucus head -like comprehensive - as shown here ) announced the new name " Trachichthyiformes " postulated taxon. In Betancur -R. et al. operates the order back under its traditional name, the exclusion of Berycidae is not confirmed here.

The following cladogram is the outer classification of mucus -like head by Betancur -R. et al. again:

Tiefseequappenartige ( Ateleopodiformes )

Eidechsenfisch Related ( Aulopiformes )

Lantern Fishy ( Myctophiformes )

Gloss Fishy ( Lampridiformes )

Paracanthomorphacea (perch -like salmon, dories, Stylephorus chordatus, cods )

Bart Fishy ( Polymixiiformes )

Mucus -like head ( Beryciformes )

Soldiers and hussars fish ( Holocentrimorphaceae )

Related perch ( Percomorphaceae )
