Beryl Grey

Dame Beryl Grey DBE, FRSA (birth name: Beryl Svenson; born June 11, 1927 in London) is a former British prima ballerina.

Life

The Beryl Svenson as infants began early with the ballet and received in 1936 at the age of nine years, a scholarship to the Sadler 's Wells Ballet School. Her first solo appearance was in 1941 in the role of Sabrina in the masque " Comus " by John Milton in the setting by Thomas Arne.

Between 1942 and 1957 she was engaged as prima ballerina at Sadler's Wells Ballet and in 1943 had become the youngest dancer danced the title role in " Giselle ". As the first English ballerina she had the following 1957-1958 guest appearances at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. 1964 was followed by guest appearances in the Chinese ballet in Beijing.

After finishing her dance career, she was 1968-1979 artistic director of the London Festival Ballet, National Ballet of today's England.

1981 published her memoirs under the title "My Favourite Ballet Stories". For her achievements, she was awarded the 1988 Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
