Bessemer is a city in Gogebic County in the U.S. state of Michigan, United States, with 2148 inhabitants ( 2000). The city is also the county seat ds Gogebic County and is situated in a very snowy due to the influence of Lake Superior area.
Geography
The City is surrounded by the Bessemer Township, but is politically independent of this. It is located further east on U.S. Highway 2 between Ironwood and Wakefield in the West. Two railway lines run through the city, the Chicago and North Western Railway as well as a range of Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railway, which, however, a few kilometers east of the city ends.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.2 km ², and there are no significant water areas. In the eastern part of the city the Kallander Creek Springs, a few hundred meters flows westward before he bends to the north and the Black River tends.
Demography
At the time of the census of 2000, there were 2148 Bessemer people. The population density was 151.6 people per km ². There were 1179 housing units at an average 83.2 per km ². The population consisted of Bessemer 96.88 % White, 0.14 % African American, 1.21% Native American, 0.42 % Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.42 % reported other races to belong and 0.88 % from two or more races. 0.70 % of the population to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Residents Bessemer distributed to 976 households out of which 25.6% were living in children under 18 years. 46.1% married couples living together, 9.8 % had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.6 % were non-families. 38.2% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 21.3 % of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.17 and the average family size is 2.88.
The population was spread out with 23.0 % under the, 6.4 % 18 -24- year-old, 24.4% 25-44 year olds, 23.3% of 45-64 year olds and 22.9 % under the age of 65 years or more. The average age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. In the over -18s accounted for 100 women, 93.3 men.
The median household income in Bessemer was 27 639 U.S. dollars, and the median family income reached the level of 36 739 U.S. dollars. The average income of men was 28 958 U.S. dollars, compared to 21 708 U.S. dollars for women. The per capita income amounted to 17,499 U.S. dollars. 12.1 % of the population and 8.6 % of families had affected an income below the poverty line, including 17.0 % of minors and 7.9 % of those age 65 or over.
Most of the inhabitants had ancestors from Italy ( 23.3 %), Finland (18.7%) Germany ( 13.8 %), Poland (11.3% ) and Sweden ( 5.7%).
