Besson (company)

Besson is a brand for Brass Buffet Crampon the group today. Until the takeover on 16 January 2006 Besson was part of the international group The Music Group.

Particular importance is attached to the tube and Euphoniums, because Besson is one among others in this area of the few suppliers of instruments with compensation system. Especially with the Euphoniums there is therefore for professional musicians only a few alternatives to Besson instruments.

The brand name comes from the French instrument maker Gustave Auguste Besson, the 1837 in Paris was patented at the age of 18 years, the prototype of the modern cornet. Until then, was understood as a cornet & Piston valves provided with a post horn. Since Besson instrument showed these designs far superior, it was all over Europe quickly became popular, and Besson founded his own factory.

1857 Besson moved its operation to London, where he developed it further. He won as a result a significant market share in the UK and exported to many other countries including the U.S.. In 1948 the company was acquired Besson on the consolidated Boosey & Hawkes, whose instrument-making subsidiaries went up in The Music Group 2003.

The Besson brand now belongs to the French company Buffet Crampon.

For quite some time can be found at online auctions and flea markets many inferior, mostly non-playable recreations of Besson instruments, including saxophones.
