β Carinae (Beta Carinae ) is the second brightest star ( 1.7 mag) in the constellation keel of the ship at the southern sky. The star is a supergiant of spectral type A2, which is approximately 110 light years away.

The star bears the historical proper names Miaplacidus. The origin of the name of the first syllable is possibly in the plural of the Arabic Mâ (water). But you may also refers to the navigation on the water. " Miaplacidus " (Arabic / Latin) could literally mean " quiet water ". Other spelling: Maiaplacidus.
