Betoota, Queensland

Betoota is a small town in the southwest of the Australian state of Queensland. The place that once got its town charter, has after the death of the last inhabitant, Sigmund "Simon" Remienko, in 2004, no permanent population more. Administratively Betoota is part of the 95,000 km ² of the Diamantina Shire, which thus is about as large as Bavaria and Hesse together, but counts according to the census of 2006, only 307 inhabitants.

The place is located 170 km east of Birdsville and 227 kilometers west of Windorah on a dirt road and had once a certain importance as you can eat there, drink, and later was able to refuel.

The last inhabitants, a post-war immigrants from Poland, from 1957 to 1997 run hotel, a building dating back to 1880 is if it still stands, the last building of the city. Sigmund "Simon" Remienko that time the hotel closed for health reasons, but continued to live there after he has surrounded it with a wire fence to discourage potential visitors.
