Betty Boothroyd, Baroness Boothroyd of Sandwell

Betty Boothroyd, Baroness Boothroyd, OM, PC ( born October 8, 1929 in Dewsbury ) is a British politician of the Labour Party and was from 1992 to 2000 the first " Madame Speaker" in the House.

Prior to her political career, she worked as a revue dancer of the " Tiller Girls".

Your seat in the lower house she moved into as Labour MP for West Bromwich on 24 May 1973. 's 727- year history of the British parliamentary system was in place of Bernard Weatherill on 29 April 1992 as the first woman Speaker for and thus to the Chairman of the the House of Commons appointed. She held this position until her resignation on 14 July 2000. Successor as Speaker of the House was the Scottish Labour MP Michael Martin.

It was reconstructed by Queen Elizabeth II as Baroness Boothroyd, of Sandwell in the West Midlands to the peerage for life raised (Life Peer ), and has since been a member of the British House of Lords.

Betty Boothroyd is Chancellor of the UK Open University.
