Betty Kaunda

Betty Kaunda (born 17 November 1928 Chinsali as Beatrice Kaweche Banda; † 19 September 2012 in Harare ) was the wife of Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda and First Lady of Zambia from 1964 to 1991.

Life

Betty, daughter of Kaweche Banda and Milika Sakala Banda, grew up in Mpika. After studying with the Mindolo Ecumenical Foundation, she worked as a teacher in Mufulira. In 1946 she married her husband Kenneth Kaunda. In May 2012, she was honored by President Michael Sata for their contribution to the struggle for independence. In 2012 she died in Harare.
