Bhikkhu Bodhi

Bhikkhu Bodhi ( b. 1944 in New York as Jeffrey Block) is an American theravada - Buddhist monk ordained in Sri Lanka. He is the second president of the Buddhist Publication Society and is author and editor of many publications in the field of Theravada Buddhism, especially of new translations of Suttapitaka in English.

Life

Bhikkhu Bodhi was in 1944 in Brooklyn, New York, and studied in the sixties philosophy at Brooklyn College. 1966 he has received his B. A. and his doctorate in 1972 at the Claremont Graduate School for Ph.D. ( Doctor of Philosophy ). In the same year he traveled to Sri Lanka, where he met one of the leading monk scholars of the country, Balangoda Ananda Maitreya, and was ordained in 1973 Bhikkhu. A year later he meets the German monk Nyanaponika Mahathera, the president and editor of the Buddhist Publication Society is time and moves in with his monk hermitage at Kandy, the " Forest Hermitage ", he in 1975.

In 1984, he is the editor / publisher of English-language publications of the Buddhist Publication Society, 1988, he also assumes the office of President of Nyanaponika Mahathera.

1995 appears a written by him and Bhikkhu Nanamoli complete new translation of the Majjhima Nikaya in English. In May 2000, Bhikkhu Bodhi holds before the United Nations on the occasion of the first official Vesakh festival at the UN the keynote address. Moreover, in the same year a written by him complete new translation of the Samyutta Nikaya appears. In 2002, he appears from his post as editor of the Buddhist Publication Society back, returns to the U.S. and taught at Bodhi Monastery ( Lafayette, NJ). He is currently working on a new translation of the Anguttara Nikaya in English, some of the suttas are published in an anthology in 2000 already.

Bhikkhu Bodhi is founder of the international organization " Buddhist Global Relief ".
