Bhrigu

Bhrigu (Sanskrit भृगु Bhrgu m. ) In Hinduism is one of the seven sages ( Saptarshi ).

Myth

Bhrigu is the progenitor of Bhrigu or Bhargavas, which belong to the way Jamadagni and Parashurama Avatar. It originated from a spark from Prajapati sperm and was brought up by Varuna. His son is Chyavana. He rescued the sage Atri Nahusha before he transformed by a curse into a snake.

The Padma Purana relates how Bhrigu visited the three gods of the Trimurti in succession. When he met Shiva, this was engrossed in lovemaking with Parvati and took no notice of the visitor. Bhrigu cursed him that he should be worshiped in the future in the form of a Linga ( cultic phallus ). Then he went to Brahma. This was surrounded by Rishis and engrossed in intellectual conversations without to take notice of his visitor. Bhrigu cursed him that he should not be worshiped. Then he came to Vishnu, the he found asleep. Bhrigu came all over his chest, whereupon Vishnu awoke with his left foot. This was pleased and pressed friendly Bhrigu's foot. He explained that Vishnu is the only being who deserves to be worshiped by gods and men.

On the other hand, he cursed Vishnu to the fact that he will be born as a human being and should be where it is separated from his wife after Vishnu Bhrigu's wife Puloma decapitated, the Asuras had taken under their protection. Vishnu was therefore born as Rama.

According to the local legend of the Indian city of Bharuch Bhrigu was founded.
