BI-RADS

The Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI -RADS ) is a standard of the American College of Radiology (ACR ) for the implementation and reporting of mammograms which was published in 1997 and has since been renewed several times. It consists of a lexicon for the diagnostic terms such as " compression ", " stove ", etc., with precise definitions and a classification for the final assessment. Each finding shall also include a standardized assessment of the X-ray density of the breast in four stages. By BI-RADS findings of the radiologist should be objectified and standardized. The descriptors are selected such that they allow a clear-cut as possible distinction between benign and malignant cases. In the U.S., the FDA BI-RADS has added to its binding guidelines for mammography.

After initial resistance, the standard was accepted and translated around the world. He is now part of all relevant recommendations and guidelines. The European mammography screening programs override using the BI - RADS standards before binding.

Since the third edition of BI-RADS contains an atlas with drawn examples. Since the fourth edition (2003 ) of the standard includes definitions and classifications for breast ultrasound (ultrasound of the breast), and those for magnetic resonance imaging of the breast ( BI -RADS - MRI). German -language translations of the fourth edition are available in bookstores; the fifth edition (Feb. 2014) can so far only be purchased in English at the ACR (see web link).

BI - RADS categories

The BI - RADS categories have by definition of the 4th edition in 2003 following meanings:

The German S3 guideline for breast cancer awareness calls for a histological confirmation by vacuum biopsy or core biopsy for all BI -RADS 4 or 5 classified findings. Under certain conditions, BI - RADS 3 findings are biopsied, eg incongruity of clinical and imaging, in Karzinophobie the patient or an appropriate risk profile.
