Bibliothèque nationale et universitaire

The Bibliothèque nationale et universitaire de Strasbourg in Strasbourg, with over three million media units, the second largest collection in France after the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris. It is legal deposit library for the region of Alsace and University Library of the University of Strasbourg.

The special collections that have been rebuilt since 1872, include about 6900 manuscripts, including about 700 from the Middle Ages, including codices with writings of Henry Suso, Meister Eckhart and Johann Tauler. History

The library was founded in 1872 as compensation for the destruction of the previous library in the former Dominican church. The building was constructed from 1889 to 1894 according to the designs of the architects Skjold Neckelmann and August Hartel on Kaiser Platz (today Place de la République) in the style of historicism according to models of the Italian Renaissance.
