BibSonomy

BibSonomy is a system for managing bookmarks ( bookmarks) and for common use of publications.

Users can save and organize their bookmarks as well as the text of interesting publications with BibSonomy in a web database ( repository ). As these contents are accessed by different users through social tagging, it is a "social bookmarking " system.

BibSonomy offers flexible ways of finding and supports the integration of different user communities by serving as an online community for literary exchange. By special collection and query options research teams and study groups are supported.

Both bookmarks and publications can be annotated by keywords ( tags) in order to structure information and to allow a flexible search. The user is thereby made proposals for keywords; but he can also select new keywords free, making the vocabulary to adapt to new content themselves. Such an uncontrolled system of concepts in social tagging is also called lay - taxonomy or folksonomy. It is developed by the contributing research groups and individual users to describe their information needs.

The text of a publication can be uploaded as a PDF for example. Publication data are stored in the BibTeX format. They can also be exported in other formats, such as HTML or EndNote ( for example to create a list of publications).

The system was developed and delivered by a team of students and researchers from the Department of Knowledge Processing at the University of Kassel. In collaboration with the University Library Kassel -based BibSonomy online reference management PUMA has been developed. PUMA stands for Academic publication management.
