Bicaz

Bicaz (Hungarian Békás ) is a town in Neamţ county in the west of Moldova in Romania.

Location

Bicaz is located on the eastern edge of the Ceahlău Mountains, which is part of the Eastern Carpathians. On the National Road (drum National) DN 12C and DN 15, the city is about 25 kilometers to the west of the county town of Piatra Neamt.

History

Bicaz was until 1960 a village, as the site in connection with the application of the reservoir Izvorul Muntelui at the Bistrita ( Bistrita ) became a town.

Population

The town has 8428 inhabitants; of which 96.02 % Romanians and 3.61% Roma; 0.37% belong to other ethnic groups. Accordingly, 96.58 % of the population are Romanian Orthodox and 1.69 % are Roman Catholic (all 2002).

Attractions

The processed in Bicaz lime is mined west of the city just before the entrance to the Bicaz gorge. In this area there is also the cave Peştera Munticelu. Due to the deep gorge of the 10 -kilometer Bicaz Gorges ( Cheile Bicazului ) whose rock faces rise to the part about 100 meters straight up, runs in a southwesterly direction a pass leading up to about 30 miles away Red Sea ( Lacul Rosu ). This was dammed by a landslide in 1837. Even today, the stumps of trees protruding from the lake.

About four kilometers north lies the artificial lake Izvorul Muntelui, the largest entirely within Romania. This offers a far-reaching view of the Eastern Carpathians.
