Biddenden

Biddenden is a place and a parish in the Borough of Ashford, Kent, England. The town has approximately 2,400 inhabitants.

History

Biddenden is located in the lowlands of Kent, about eight kilometers north of Tenterden and was a center of ironworking and clothing industry. During the reign of Edward the Third (1327-1377) Flemish dress maker settled in the area around Biddenden. The landscape is well known for its wine and cider production ( Cider ).

Origin of the name

The name of Biddenden is derived from Old English and means translates as Biddas forest area.

Personalities

  • Around 1100 AD, were Mary and Eliza Chulkhurst, Siamese twins, born in Biddenden, a representation of the siblings is now the symbol of the village.
  • On December 21, 1821 Utah pioneer John R. Winder was born in Biddenden.
  • On 29 May 1951, the German composer and music educator Robert Kahn died ( born July 21, 1865 in Mannheim) in exile in Biddenden.

Attractions

The Anglican All Saint 's Church, the Anglican Holy Mother Church is a Romanesque church with a cemetery attached, can be found on the also the double grave of Siamese twins Mary and Eliza Chulkhurst. The pews of the church are elaborately equipped with knitted by parishioners seat cushion, especially the pillow with motif series (eg cross variations and seasons) are noteworthy.

In the entrance area located opposite two artfully executed window, the bird motifs show ("All ye birds on the wing praise the LORD! " / " All the birds of the air, praise GOD! ").
