Biebrich scarlet is the name for a dis- azo dye. The trade was the disodium salt, a red-brown, in water with a yellow-red color good dissolving powder. It dyes wool and silk cochenilleartig red. Found it was established in 1878 by Rudolf Nietzki and from 1879 at Kalle in Wiesbaden -Biebrich.

Production

Biebrich scarlet (5 ) is obtained by diazotization of sulfanilic acid (1 ) and subsequent coupling to orthanilic. To prevent the amino group can be triazenes of orthanilic acid by reaction with the adduct of formaldehyde / bisulfite protected (2). The resulting monoazo (3) is coupled rediazotiert and β -naphthol (4).
