Biennale of Sydney

The Biennale of Sydney is a two -yearly international art exhibition in Sydney ( Australia).

The Biennale of Sydney is an international exhibition festival takes place since 1978 in Sydney, the largest city in Australia each at several venues. The first Biennale was held with 36 participating artists in the newly inaugurated Sydney Opera House. The exhibition program is complemented since then with performances, symposia, workshops and discussions. In the previously held sixteen biennials over 1500 artistic positions from 60 countries were shown.

Thematically had the biennials partly priorities that were primarily concerned with the cultural orientation of the country. The events in 1976 and 1979 showed the cultural and ethnic diversity of Australia, in 1973 and 1976, the art of Asia and the Pacific and in 1979, 1982 and 1984, the social changes in Australian society.

The 14th Biennale of Sydney 2004 took place on 4 June to 15 August under the theme On Reason and Emotion in the major museums, the main gallery, the Royal Botanic Gardens and place in front of the Opera House, curator Isabel Carlos was. The 15th Biennale 2006, under the title Zones of Contact, lasted from 8 June to 27 August. It was attended by 85 artists from 44 countries. Scene were sixteen different places of the city, including large-scale museums and galleries and the Pier 2/3 at Walsh Bay. The festival had over 300,000 visitors, the director was Charles Merewether.

The 16th Biennale 2008 was from 18 June to 7 September under the theme Revolutions - Forms That Turn open and covered by Kasimir Malevich and Man Ray to contemporary works by over 80 artists. As an exhibition places the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney, the Sydney Opera House, various private gallery and the Pier 2/3 at Walsh Bay were included. Artistic Director was the curator and writer Carolyn Christov- Bakargiev. The exhibits German artists included, among others, Joseph Beuys, Thomas Bayrle and Adolf Luther.

The 17th Biennale 2010 took place from May 12 to August 1, 2010 under the direction of David Eliott under the theme THE BEAUTY OF DISTANCE: Songs of Survival in a Precarious Age instead. Was Accessed on the venues of 2008.

The 18th Biennale in 2012 under the motto all our relations took place between 16 September 27 June. Artistic Director Catherine de Zegher and Gerald were McMaster.

The theme of the 19th Biennale 2014 You Imagine What You Desire. The main sponsor is the Australian company Transfield Services, in 2014, among other stock for Australia operates rejected asylum seekers on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea and Nauru since the beginning of the year. In protest against the sponsor several dozen artists canceled their participation in the Biennale.
