Big John Greer

Big John Greer ( born November 21, 1923 in Hot Springs, Arkansas, † 1972) was an American jazz and rhythm and blues tenor saxophonist and singer.

Life and work

Big John Greer was known primarily for his recordings that have emerged in the years 1949 and 1955. Greer was a friend of Henry Glover; they studied together and Glover later played in Lucky Millinder band DERs, as Bull Moose Jackson in 1948 left the group to pursue a solo career. Glover advised the band leader to bring Greer as a replacement for Jackson. Greer then looked at Milli DERs recordings until 1950 that arose for RCA. Greer stayed with RCA and played with Wynonie Harris and Bull Moose Jackson. First solo recordings by Greer appeared as a vocalist in 1948 on the small label Sittin ' In With, a year later at Victor. In 1952 he had with his ballad " Got You on My Mind ," his only hit. In 1954, he joined the RCA sub-label Groove Records, for which he " Come Back Maybellene " grossed "Bottle It Up and Go" and, but have received little attention. Greer was no further Hiterfolge achieve more, not even with his photographs, which he recorded 1955/56, for King Records. In 1957 he returned to his hometown of Hot Springs, Arkansas, where he died as a result of alcoholism with only 48 years.
