Big Sister (software)

Big Sister System and Network Monitor is a free software released under the GNU General Public License. Big Sister network monitor is universally known as Big Sister known, but here there is a likelihood of confusion with other monitoring projects, which are also known by this name.

With Microsoft's. NET Framework Big Sister also runs under Microsoft Windows.

Big Sister is the open source version of the monitoring software BigBrother Quest of the company and accordingly compatible with it. Big Sister offers a collection of plugins for network, host and service monitoring, and a web interface to query the data collected. It is also possible to represent the collected performance data using RRDTool as graphs.

Operation

The parent process, so the Big Sister server obtains its information from agents, which collect these in various ways, eg, via SNMP, Perl programs, etc.. Sending the data from the agent to Big Sister server via the TCP.

In this way, complex networks and systems can be monitored, Big Sister has the opportunity to save their status in mySQL databases or text files, and tables present the current results on one web interface. If an error occurs the responsible administrator is notified, for example by sending an e -mail.
