Bílina (river)

The Bílina ( German Biela ) is a left tributary of the Elbe River in northern Bohemia (Czech Republic).

It rises in the Czech middle Erzgebirge two kilometers west of the town Zákoutí ( Bernau ) and flows in a northeasterly direction, the cities Jirkov ( Görkau ), Most ( Brux ), Bílina ( Bilin ) and Trmice ( Türmitz ) until it finally after 49 km in the Ústí nad Labem ( Usti nad Labem ) flows into the Elbe.

In the Valley of Biela are abundant lignite. Their open pit mining operation had the effect that many villages have been dredged. The old city Brüx fell victim to the brown coal mining; today must has a built as a replacement slab city.

The Bílina now flows through an embossed from surface mines and their final voids landscape. In the conversion of Ervěnický koridor it is piped.

The river is dammed in the dam and the reservoir Jirkov Újezd ​​.

Along the river run the railways Ústí nad Labem - Chomutov and Trmice - Bílina ( Biela Valley Railway ).
